Over the weekend, I read the new book by Thomas Waldherr “Bob Dylan & Black America” with the subtitle “On the diverse interdependencies between Bob Dylan’s oeuvre and the African American community and its culture”.
The long-time music journalist for http://www.Country.de and http://www.Folker.de and co-editor of renowned Dylan magazine http://www.KeyWestMagazin.com knows his craft. His book “I’m in a Cowboy Band. Bob Dylan, the country music and the legacy of Americana” was published in 2011.
The genre “A pop-cultural essay” hits the nail right on the head. This is a well written, knowledgeable book, yet always easy to read (if you speak German). The author proceeds largely chronologically, reveals a lot of amazing facts about Dylan’s earliest beginnings, touches intimate details of Dylan’s private life and and ends up-to-date with the album Rough And Rowdy Ways.
You‘ll follow him from Dylan‘s blues influences to his rap collaborations. I especially liked the concise deconstruction of individual songs, e.g. Goodbye Jimmy Reed. Particularly noteworthy is that Waldherr takes a clear stance on the topic. He leaves no doubt which side he‘s on.

Habe über’s Wochenende mit viel Erkenntnisgewinn das neue Buch von Thomas Waldherr „Bob Dylan & Black America“ mit dem Untertitel „Zu den vielfältigen Verflechtungen von Bob Dylans Werk und Wirken mit der afroamerikanischen Community und ihrer Kultur“ gelesen.
Der langjährige Musikjournalist bei http://www.Country.de und http://www.Folker.de und Co-Herausgeber des renommierten Dylan-Magazins http://www.KeyWestMagazin.com hat sein Handwerkszeug gelernt und weiß, worüber er schreibt. Schon 2011 erschien sein Buch „I’m in a Cowboy Band. Bob Dylan, die Country-Musik und das Vermächtnis des Americana“.
Die Genreangabe „Ein popkulturelles Essay“ trifft es daher sehr gut. Das ist dicht geschrieben, kenntnis- und faktenreich, dabei immer gut lesbar. Der Autor geht weitgehend chronologisch vor, verrät viel Verblüffendes über die frühesten Anfänge Dylans, greift weit ins Privatleben aus und endet topaktuell mit dem Album Rough And Rowdy Ways.
In der Breite werden von Blues bis Rap vielfältigste Bezüge hergestellt, in der Tiefe gelingen die konzise Dekonstruktion einzelner Songs, z. B. von Goodbye Jimmy Reed. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die klare eigene politische Haltung, mit der Waldherr das Thema beleuchtet.
